Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrate of plasma protein, which is derived directly from the patient’s’ own blood by centrifuging it to remove the red blood cells. PRP has a greater concentration of growth factors than whole blood. PRP utilizes your own body’s healing ability to stimulate skin recovery, boost collagen production, and has been used in many applications to encourage skin healing, anti-aging, and rejuvenation.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Process

Platelet-Rich Plasma Centrifuge

Creating platelet-rich plasma isn’t a complicated or difficult process and can be performed in office. Whole blood is drawn from the patient, just like it would be done for a typical blood test. The blood is then put into a centrifuge and is spun at a specific speed for a specified amount of time. After 10 minutes in the centrifuge, the red blood cells have separated from the plasma-rich plasma, and is ready to use. Once prepared, the PRP can now be used for various topical or injected treatments.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatments

Types of dermatological conditions PRP can help treat include:

  • facial fine lines
  • crepey neck
  • sun damaged skin
  • brown spots
  • pore size reduction
  • deep wrinkle reduction
  • acne scarring reduction
  • skin resurfacing

Depending on the extent and depth of the skin problem, different treatment techniques are used.

Topical treatment used with photo light treatment can reduce the the appearance of brown spots and sun damaged skin. Treatment can take only 15 minutes with mild post-procedure stinging, mild redness, and swelling may last 1-2 days.

Topical treatment used with microneedling can boost deeper collagen production for a more dramatic effect of deeper lying conditions. Treatment can take 15-30 minutes with redness and swelling usually lasts 2-4 days (a weekend is perfect). Depth of treatment is dictated by what condition we are treating. For instance, acne scars and deep wrinkles may experience more downtime.

Advantages of PRP

There are many advantages of using platelet-rich plasma for skin therapy. Advantages include:

  • no allergic reaction to medication
  • no foreign medicine being used (such as Botox)
