Deviated Septum Repair (Septoplasty)
What causes a deviated septum?
A deviated septum occurs when the septum–the thick band of bone and fibrous tissue that divides your two nostrils–is off center to one or both sides. Many people are born with a deviate septum, which simply worsens as they age. In addition to genetics, birth trauma or physical injury can also cause a deviated septum. A deviated septum can disrupt airflow, causing snoring, difficulty breathing, and in some cases, an aesthetically unwanted appearance such as a crooked nose. Deviated septum repair, or septoplasty, straightens the nasal septum, thus addressing both cosmetic and functional (breathing) issues. Some people undergo a septoplasty solely to correct breathing problems; they are happy with the appearance of their nose, wishing to leave it intact. Other septoplasty patients also wish to change the shape of their nose. Again, Dr. Klausner is well versed in correcting both of these issues. As a NYC expert in facial aesthetic medicine, she is renowned for helping her patients achieve their best look while maintaining a natural appearance.
Double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Klausner is a top NYC expert in rhinoplasty (nasal surgery), including deviated septum repair. In addition to her specializing in facial plastic surgery, she is board certified in otolaryngology (head and neck surgery). Like other surgical procedures that address an internal and/or external nasal issue, a septoplasty procedure requires a great deal of technical skill and artistry, which Dr. Klausner’s high level of comprehensive training enables her to provide patients.
What is a turbinoplasty?
The turbinates are swellings on the outer walls of the nasal cavities. Their job is to help moisturize, filter and warm incoming air. Enlarged turbinates (turbinate hypertrophy) can cause breathing issues. Oftentimes if you have a crooked septum, you may experience turbinate hypertrophy as well, which can be addressed in conjunction during surgical septoplasty.
What should I expect from a septoplasty consultation?
During a private consultation in her warm, modern, and professional office located on Park Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Dr. Klausner will thoroughly review your condition and see if you are a good candidate for deviated septum repair. She will help you determine your overall goals, answer all of your questions and concerns, and review before and after photos with you. Because a septoplasty addresses medical concerns such as obstructed breathing, this type of surgery is often covered by insurance.
