Nasal Valve Collapse Treatment

Nasal valve collapse is an obstruction that occurs when the nasal valve is weakened or narrowed. This condition can cause severe nasal congestion, difficulty breathing and other uncomfortable symptoms. Nasal valve surgery with double-board certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Klausner–one of NYC’s leading experts specializing in cosmetic rhinoplasty, functional rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty and septal perforation repair–can permanently correct nasal valve collapse issues.

What is the Nasal Valve?

Located in the middle to lower part of the nose, the nasal valve is the part of the nose with the narrowest airway. The nasal valve consists of four components:

  • The anterior septum
  • Lateral nasal wall
  • Head of the inferior turbinate
  • Ossious piriform aperture

Anything that compromises these areas can weaken or further narrow the nasal valve, creating limited airflow and causing very uncomfortable symptoms such as:

  • Severe nasal congestion
  • Resistance when breathing
  • Nosebleeds
  • Obstruction of the nasal and sinus passageways
  • Snoring
  • Mouth breathing
  • Crusting

Common causes of nasal valve collapse include:

  • A deviated septum
  • Prior nose surgery or cosmetic rhinoplasty, including dorsal hump” removal (can cause bilateral internal valve collapse)
  • Nose trauma or fracture (may cause saddling of the nasal bridge, inflammation, enlarged tissue or excess scar tissue)
  • The aging process (weakens the overall structure of the nose)
  • Congenital defect (such as narrow nostrils)

Nasal valve collapse can be difficult to initially diagnose. In fact, many physicians overlook nasal valve collapse as a major cause of sinus conditions. In determining if you have nasal valve collapse, you must first meet with a board-certified ENT (ontolaryngologist) or other sinus specialist for proper diagnosis. Be sure to explain all of your symptoms and disclose any previous rhinoplasty procedures.

Nasal Valve Surgery

Many patients diagnosed with nasal valve collapse opt for surgery to permanently correct their symptoms. During surgery, Dr. Klausner rebuilds the nose to create more structural support. Often times cartilage grafting of both the internal and external nasal valves is needed to create more stability.

Because Dr. Klausner is highly skilled in both cosmetic rhinoplasty (aesthetic nose reshaping) and functional rhinoplasty (breathing issues), she can effectively address both the aesthetic and medical needs of each nasal valve collapse patient. Well versed in today’s most innovative nasal valve surgical techniques, Dr. Klausner’s strives to help each patient achieve their overall goals, which may include improved nasal function as well as greater self-confidence in their appearance.

Consultation

During your nasal valve surgery consultation Dr. Klausner will listen carefully to your symptoms and concerns. Dr. Klausner will then spend time describing the procedure in detail, going over all of your options and reviewing before and after photos so that you can devise an action plan you feel most comfortable with.
